feat(scheduled-tasks): run timed tasks on days of the month and in chosen months - #26001
A task set to At a time can only pick days of the week. A monthly or quarterly job, such as a report on the 4th or on the 5th of January, April, July and October, needs a daily task that checks the date and exits, or a cron job outside T3 Code. Requested in #19009.
Change
fixed_time schedules take optional monthDays (1–31) and months (1–12). A task picks days of the week or days of the month, not both. months works with either. A day a month doesn't have, such as the 31st or 29 February, runs on that month's last day, once. The fields live in the existing schedule JSON, so there is no migration and existing tasks are unchanged.
The server finds the next run on local wall-clock time, so DST doesn't shift it.
The web and mobile editors gain Days of the week / Days of the month, a 1–31 grid and an Only in some months switch. Chosen items show a check. A one-line summary such as "At 09:00 on the 5th of Jan, Apr, Jul and Oct." comes from one function in client-runtime, plus a note when a chosen day is past a month's end.
Older servers would drop the new fields and run the task every day. Servers now advertise a scheduledTaskMonthDays capability, and both editors offer days of the month and months only when it is present. Saving those choices to a server without it is refused with an explanation.
The schedule_task MCP schema describes the fields. The user guide has a short "Scheduled times" section.
Known limitations, left out to keep this to one problem:
A client that predates this, such as an older mobile build, shows a month-day task as daily and saves it as daily if edited. Webhook filters have the same limit for older clients.
Maintainer approval is not claimed. I believe this fits the focused configuration route, and eligibility is the maintainers' call:
Existing capability: an At a time task already lets you choose its time and which days of the week it runs on.
What the option controls: only which calendar days that same task fires on: days of the month instead of days of the week, and optionally which months.
Why it stays within that capability: there is no new schedule type or workflow. A run starts the same way, with the same thread, workspace and missed-run handling. Defaults are unchanged: existing tasks decode as they are, with no migration, and a new task still starts on days of the week. The editor only adds controls inside the existing At a time section. The capability flag only hides those controls from servers that can't store them.
It was proposed with this implementation in #19009 (#19009 (comment)). The person who opened that discussion replied "Nice, yes I think this is good." (#19009 (reply in thread)), but no maintainer has replied yet. I'm happy to change its scope or close it.
#25479 covered the same problem differently, with one date a month and months without that date skipped. It was closed on Oct 30 for lacking a before screenshot. This PR follows the approach proposed in #19009.
Verification
Tests:
Next runs: every month, month lengths, the 31st, 29 February, months across a year boundary, and DST (Schedule.test.ts).
The service stores the schedule and picks the next chosen day (ScheduledTaskService.schedule.test.ts).
The contract accepts month days with months and rejects weekdays with month days.
The shared summary and the web and mobile draft logic.
The server advertises the capability.
A web browser test shows the controls only when the server advertises the capability. It fails if the gate is removed.
vp run check:changed passes: format, lint, knip, typecheck of 36 packages, and the tests beside the changes.
End to end, on a dev server with the web client and an Android emulator:
On web I created tasks for the 4th and 6th, the 5th of Jan/Apr/Jul/Oct, and the 31st. The server stored 09:00 local on Nov 4, Jan 5 and Oct 31, and the list showed matching next runs.
Reopening a task restores its choices.
Adding the 31st from Android saved, and the next run became Oct 31.
A task for "the 27th at 15:34" fired at 15:34:03 and moved its next run to Nov 27.
An agent asked to schedule "16:12 on the 27th, only in October" called schedule_task with monthDays: [27], months: [10].
Not checked: the MCP evals (no API key on this machine), the Electron shell (only the web UI it wraps), and iOS.

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR introduces a substantial scheduling capability across the shared contract, server execution logic, web editor, and mobile editor, including new month-day semantics and month-end fallback behavior. The additive schema and tests reduce compatibility risk, but the cross-cutting runtime and user-facing changes merit human review.

Walkthrough
Fixed-time scheduled tasks now support weekday or month-day selection, optional month filters, and month-end fallback. Contracts, client drafts, web and mobile editors, and server next-run calculation support these options. Environments advertise month-day support, and editors block unsupported calendar schedules.

The scheduler filters candidate runs by weekdays, month days, and months. Selected days beyond a month’s length match that month’s last day. Schedule comparisons normalize selections. Tests cover calendar behavior, time-zone transitions, and schedule updates.
The client runtime exports fixed-time schedule descriptions, ordinal formatting, and month-end fallback text. Tests and user documentation cover these descriptions and schedule behavior.

The editors show calendar controls based on server capability or existing draft settings, display schedule descriptions, and block unsupported calendar schedules from saving. Web toggle components add a check variant for selection controls.

Re the description check above: I can't add a maintainer approval because there isn't one yet. Instead, Scope and approval now explains why I think this fits the focused configuration route in CONTRIBUTING:
Existing capability: an At a time task already chooses its time and days of the week.
What this adds: a choice of days of the month and months for that same task.
What it doesn't change: no new workflow, run behavior, defaults or migration.
Approval is not claimed; eligibility is the maintainers' call. CodeRabbit raised no code issues, so the code is unchanged.

Addressed CodeRabbit's finding from this review ("Block saving until server configuration loads") in 1e98650.
Mobile now disables Save, and save() returns early, until the environment's server config has loaded. Before that, the editor can't tell whether the server supports days of the month, so editing a month-day task could wrongly show "Update this environment". Web already waits: its Save stays disabled until the server config is present. vp run check:changed passes.

scheduleFromDraft omits monthDays when all 31 days are selected and omits months when all 12 months are selected. The loader derives month mode and month limiting from field presence, so a reload can restore weekday mode and disable month limiting. A later edit can then save a different recurrence rule.

Minor · Add the month-end fallback note to the web scheduleLabel… · ScheduledTasksSettings.tsx:302-310
Add the month-end fallback note to the web scheduleLabel for month-day schedules.
scheduleLabel returns only describeFixedTimeSchedule(schedule) for fixed-time schedules. A schedule such as monthDays [31] therefore displays as "At 09:00 on the 31st of every month" with no note that shorter months run on their last day. The web task list (ScheduledTasksSettings.tsx:739) and the thread automation panel (ThreadAutomationsPanel.tsx:43) both show this text. The editor at ScheduledTasksSettings.tsx:1127 and :1232 adds the fallback separately, so the editor is the only place that shows it.
Composing describeMonthEndFallback into scheduleLabel would add the note to both read-only displays. The editor calls describeFixedTimeSchedule and describeMonthEndFallback directly, not scheduleLabel, so the editor note would not be duplicated.
The consequence is a user-facing information gap. A user who reads the summary may expect no run in February and be surprised by a run on February 28 or 29.

For the budget, 029206b trims the new schema text to the two fields plus one description: "Days past a month's end run on its last day." It also leaves the shared trigger description unchanged. The growth is now +220 bytes of MCP tool schema, down from +432, and agentContextBudget.json records it. New fields can't add zero bytes, so could a maintainer add the agent-context-increase label if this direction is acceptable?

Resolve the agent-context budget check before merge.
This value increases mcpToolListJsonBytes from 46007 to 46227 (+220 bytes). The Agent Context Budget check rejects this increase, so CI fails. Reduce the MCP text and update this value, or obtain the required agent-context-increase maintainer label. Do not revert only this value because AgentContextBudget.test.ts requires it to match the measured runtime value.

Prevent older clients from clearing calendar schedules.
If an older client edits a month-day task, its fixed-time upsert omits monthDays and months. The server saves that submitted schedule as the replacement, so an edit to the prompt can change the task to a daily schedule and recalculate its next run. The PR description identifies this older-client behavior; the server upsert confirms the replacement path. Require an explicit calendar-selection change before clearing these fields, or reject an ambiguous update to an existing calendar task. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

…osen months
A timed task could only pick weekdays, so a monthly or quarterly report
needed a daily task that checked the date and exited.
A fixed_time schedule now also takes monthDays (1-31) and months (1-12).
A day a month doesn't have, such as the 31st, runs on that month's last
day. Weekdays and days of the month are mutually exclusive on save; old
rows decode unchanged and no migration is needed. The web and mobile
editors gain a days-of-the-month choice and an "Only in some months"
switch that reveals the months, show the schedule as a sentence, and mark
chosen days and months with a check. Both clients describe schedules with
one shared function. The MCP schedule schema documents the new fields.
Servers advertise a scheduledTaskMonthDays capability, and both editors
offer days of the month and months only when it is present: an older
server would drop the fields and run the task every day.

Replies to CodeRabbit's open comments:
Agent context budget (comment): new fields always add some bytes. The added text is trimmed to the two fields plus one sentence, so the growth is +220 bytes (46,109 → 46,329), recorded in agentContextBudget.json. It passes once the agent-context-increase label is added, as requested above.
Older clients clearing month days (comment): this is the known limitation in the description. An older client's save leaves out the new fields, and the server can't tell that apart from a newer client switching a task back to every day. The fix would follow how webhook filters work:
the server keeps the stored monthDays and months when an update leaves them out
every client and agent sends [] to clear them
That changes the server, both editors and the MCP schema, which adds a few more budget bytes. I've left it out to keep this PR small, and I'm happy to add it if maintainers want it.
From the Oct 27 review:
Full selections are saved as "no filter" (web scheduledTasksSettings.logic.ts and mobile scheduledTaskDraft.ts): this is intentional. All 31 days means every day, and all 12 months means every month. The server compares schedules with the same normalisation. The editor reopens in the equivalent state, so a later edit still describes the same schedule. Storing full lists would only add redundant data.
Month-end note missing from read-only labels (web scheduleLabel and mobile describeSchedule): the task lists and the thread panel stay one line. Their next-run date already shows the day a short month runs on, such as Nov 30 for the 31st. The editor shows the rule while you choose.

Problem
A task set to At a time can only pick days of the week. A monthly or quarterly job, such as a report on the 4th or on the 5th of January, April, July and October, needs a daily task that checks the date and exits, or a cron job outside T3 Code. Requested in #19009.
Change
fixed_timeschedules take optionalmonthDays(1–31) andmonths(1–12). A task picks days of the week or days of the month, not both.monthsworks with either. A day a month doesn't have, such as the 31st or 29 February, runs on that month's last day, once. The fields live in the existing schedule JSON, so there is no migration and existing tasks are unchanged.client-runtime, plus a note when a chosen day is past a month's end.scheduledTaskMonthDayscapability, and both editors offer days of the month and months only when it is present. Saving those choices to a server without it is refused with an explanation.schedule_taskMCP schema describes the fields. The user guide has a short "Scheduled times" section.Known limitations, left out to keep this to one problem:
Scope and approval
Maintainer approval is not claimed. I believe this fits the focused configuration route, and eligibility is the maintainers' call:
It was proposed with this implementation in #19009 (#19009 (comment)). The person who opened that discussion replied "Nice, yes I think this is good." (#19009 (reply in thread)), but no maintainer has replied yet. I'm happy to change its scope or close it.
#25479 covered the same problem differently, with one date a month and months without that date skipped. It was closed on Oct 30 for lacking a before screenshot. This PR follows the approach proposed in #19009.
